The front page of one of NYC’s free-dailies (one of the few markets that can sustain 2 of them, let alone all the paid for daily newspapers), it says ‘Evil Twin: Fey’s Palin impression has some wondering if SNL will sway the election.’
I would hope it does…and no one should be shocked if and when it happens. For the past 18 months (and seemingly 33 years), SNL has reigned at its most supreme when it’s slaying politicians. Yes, the idea of Chevy Chase playing Gerald Ford was and is laughable, but they were only playing up his supposed bufoonaery, whereas Phil Hartman doing Reagan and Clinton were true to look and character. But none of this is new. The premise is this: young people watch SNL (I am still within THAT age group, thankfully!). For the past 18 months, we’ve heard how Obama’s campaign has mobilized the youth vote. Well, who else watches the show. So, they’re doing a brilliant job of playing to their audience. I will save my liberal media rant for another time – as a more liberal person who spent 10 years in hard-news, I am man enough to admit that there is a bias. But again, more on that later… One last note: when was the last time you saw a republican comedian? And if there is anyone who can answer that, answer me this: how funny was he/she?
