This is going to be one of many postings on music. I studied to be a music producer in college and but for the gigantic loans I had to pay back, I probably would have been.
Music and baseball are my two primary passions – as I said in my posting earlier this week – with abutments to food and wine.
So, music runs through me. I was chatting with a bartender the other night about how she and I each have a song going in our heads at all times. Really amazing when I don’t have a tune banging around. It could be Tool, it could be Steve Earle, it could be Gershwin or anyone else. Literally, you name it.
Anyway, I think it was Duke Ellington (may have been Basie) who said ‘There are two kinds of music: good and bad.’ I could not more subscribe with any saying than that. I urge all of you to take a spin on sites like Pandora or last.fm or iTunes and try some new music. Look up something you’ve never heard before. Be open to new things: new artists, new genres, new instruments…
Some of my favorite records of the past few years I’d never have bought if I’d not sampled them online. I found ‘Antony and the Johnsons – Like A Bird’ while streaming my old college radio station late one night at home. That record could very well go down as the album of the decade, in my opinion. I’ve never heard anything as original as that. Never since or before.
Push your limits, push your mind!
