The last few weeks have been nearly idyllic here in New York City. The subways have been pretty quiet, the sidewalks (at least in the areas I live and work – I tweeted recently about how Midtown was bedlam the week of New Year’s) have been very quiet.
I had started to wonder if the economic downturn had effected pedestrianism. This morning I was reminded that it was just the holidays!
The trains are back to full capacity.
I mean, I am writing this with my hands closer to my chest than they’d be if I were doing the pledge of allegiance…almost. I can only imagine that the streets and sidewalks will be back to their normal bustle as well.
As much as I greet this change with a measure of trepidation, I also welcome this with open arms. This is why I live in New York City. I live here to be within an inch of my life and humanity. The last few weeks have been this urbanite’s trip to the countryside. Now, it’s time for life to return. Now it’s time for the resumption of time.
I hope each of you had a wonderful holiday season and a Happy and prosperous New Year!
