I wrote this in the wake of the recent US commitment of sending more men and women to fight in Iraq.
It’s too much to askTo have these men, these women
See the world they must
All the rest of their days. Taken from the cradle
And forced out on the field
Before the limbs could heal…
Asked to do too much
Asked to see it all. Visor of blood-soaked memories
Glides over their eyes
Cannot sleep
Forced to dream This nightmare
It can be no surprise. It’s too much to ask
To have these men, these women
See the world they must
All the rest of their days. All gave some and some gave all
That’s for sure.
The reasons why become a blur.
Never missed the bell that called
Keeping sacrifice at hand
Know the right and wrong of man. Visor of blood-soaked memories
Glides over their eyes
Cannot sleep
Forced to dream This nightmare
It can be no surprise. On bellies and bayonets
Fighting for hearts and minds
Theirs, their own and mine.
Left the world behind All gave some and some gave all
That’s for sure.
The reasons why become a blur.
Never missed the bell that called
Keeping sacrifice at hand
Know the right and wrong of man. The reasons why become a blur…
