Starting today, I am going to file a week’s worth of pieces from the time I leave my home train station of 86th and Lexington Avenue to Union Square in Manhattan. Sometimes I take the express train, but most mornings, I take the local. The express can be really crowded and the local affords me 5 extra minutes in which to write. The trip offers me time to view things, take things in and consider the day. I do love the NYC Subway. So much so, that this week, I shall be posting these from the train without my iPod on. I want these stories to be about the ride, the train, the people I see, and how I’m feeling about all of that.
Today seems to be an average Monday, everyone is pretty quiet. Without my iPod on, it’s amazing how otherwise silent this lot of morning commuters is. A lot of people, like me, probably stayed up too late to watch the Yankees’ game and see them close out the grand old dame of Yankee Stadium. Not only did we win, but it was a glorious early Fall evening and the mood seemed just right.
Any trip on the train would be incomplete, in spring, summer or fall, without girls in these cheap-looking flip-flops. I cannot say they bug me, especially if they have nice feet, but it seems inappropriate footwear for office jobs.
Well, 15 minutes later, I am here. So far, this seems like a regular old Monday. I do hope that changes…I don’t like ‘regular’ or ‘old’ at all.
